Gene Guibord was born in Minneapolis, MN where he studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center and the University of Minnesota. Guibord draws from a lifetime of experiences and impressions etched in his memory...the touching scene of a doe and her fawn, the solitary egret in a rice field, the diving gulls of Lake Cascade, the detached elegance of his cat. He then reduces the subjects to its least common denominator through line and form without losing a realistic interpretation. He begins with drawings based on his impression of the subject. The next step is to shape a rough form using sugar pine which is then covered with a fiber filler. The piece is carved, refined, detailed and sanded to a glasslike finish. A mold is fashioned from this original work. The limited edition bronze sculptures are hand crafted using the traditional lost wax method of casting. The hot patinas are unique and lasting.
